Direct to Substrate Overview
Flexi-Print Services:
This new process involves digitally printing with a brand new technology and a special UV ink directly to the surface of a display substrate. There are three key benefits:
You can print on to (almost) any surface.
The inks are suitable for interior and exterior applications.
It is an economic process.

We have invested in the very latest UV ink digital flat bed printer. The benefit is FANTASTIC quality wide format printing at economic rates. The key to the quality is a capability to print ink using variable drop sizes

PLUS: DIGITAL PRINTING WITH WHITE INK!

Summary:
This fantastic print quality is achieved by inkjet printing very accurately directly to the display media. It offers, 'digital screen printing' for short to medium print runs. The method of drying the ink instantly using UV light allows full colour images to be digitally printed to a wide variety of surfaces from standard display boards of all types to acrylics, woods and other non-traditional display surfaces. Textured materials are also printable due to this UV ink curing technology.

Effective resolution using variable dot technology:
The printer can apply 7 different ink drop sizes from 6 to 42 picolitres in size. The technology uses small drops for text and details such as gradients and larger drops for areas of solid colour. The resultant print produces the equivalent of 1440 dots per inch quality. The printer blends this technology across an image automatically with the capability to print 6-point text, large areas of strong solid colours and gradients in the same artwork.

Ink suitable for interior and exterior applications:
The ink can be used on exterior applications, as it is waterproof and UV light resistant. This means you don't have to compromise on quality for exterior display applications.

White ink printed digitally:
White ink creates a whole new level of flexibility for wide format printing. We can digitally print white as part of your graphic design. This is particularly useful when printing full colour images to non-white media i.e. clear acrylics or naturally coloured media such as wood or coloured display boards such as black foamex.

It is ideal for creating innovative graphic solutions. Here are some of the ways white can be used:

  • Spot Colour white: this is using white in specific artwork applications for example under a logo on a non-white surface to ensure the logo colour is accurate to the brand.
  • Over printing white: this is a whole layer of white used to back up a full colour image printed on a clear material such as acrylic. This provides a punchy full colour image with the colours bright and true to the colours chosen.
  • Under printing white: this is the laying down a coating of white under an image on a non-white surface and then printing the full colour image on top to achieve perfect colours.
  • Combination white printing: amazingly the printer is able to print 3 separate elements of an image simultaneously. This is particularly suitable for double sided images on clear materials for example acrylic. This equates to printing a 4-colour layer direct to the acrylic surface, then a layer of white on top of this and finally another layer of the full colour image on top.
WOW! It's probably best if you call and chat to us about this one!

Print and cut services:
Colour Studios have invested in a digital board cutting CAD tool. This allows us to cut rigid boards such as foamex and display card to any shaped cutter file. This can be simple rectangles and circles or in fact the cutting and creasing of complicated tight patterns.
The combination of digital full colour printing direct to display materials and then being able to crease and cut to any digital cutter guide provides a very powerful graphics production tool.

Printing to rolled media:
The printer has been designed as a flat bed device i.e. the media is positioned on a flat aluminium bed and held in place by a powerful vacuum. The printer also has a roll feed system available to printing to flexible rolled materials. This combination allows the same ink and colour matches to be achieved for a display campaign using both rigid and flexible substrates.

Ideal Applications:
Wide format displays for retail environments, exhibitions, showrooms, conferences and events. Fine art quality display solutions on materials such as wood, metal, acrylic and ceramic. Three-dimensional print, cut and crease jobs such as mock up or short run boxes and packaging.
